Trips to lighthouses

Day 5: North Ronaldsay

Orkney & Shetland (2014) Posted on Wed, May 21, 2014 17:59:11

When we woke up this morning it was already raining. Our plans were exploring the Island on foot and going to the lighthouse. But because it was so pooring we decided to take the car to explore the Island. Which off course by car doesn’t take you that much time. But anyway we are hoping that it gets better tomorrow so we can do a guided tour of the lighthouse and take some nice shots of the lighthouse. The rest of the day we took it easy.

Day 4: Getting to North Ronaldsay

Orkney & Shetland (2014) Posted on Wed, May 21, 2014 15:37:44

Today we took the 10.30AM ferry to North Ronaldsay. When we went to the ticket office she told us if it was a problem that the car would be taken off the boat by a crane? Euhm I guess not 🙂

We were the only ones with car. There was a lot of cargo that needed to come along on the boat.

It was 2.30pm when we arrived at North Ronaldsay what was late as the boat first had to stop along Papa westray to load off the cargo there. Once arrived on the Island we went to the Bird observatory where we were staying. And didn’t do much anymore. As we are staying here until Friday. We went for a walk in the evening after dinner.

Day 3: Taking the ferry to Orkney

Orkney & Shetland (2014) Posted on Wed, May 21, 2014 15:17:58

This morning we took the 9.30AM ferry at Gill’s bay to St Margaret’s Hope. Just about an hour crossing. You can see the stroma lighthouse from the boat but unfortunately the weather wasn’t good so no useful shots of the lighthouse possible.

Once we arrived there we first went to Hoxa Head to see the remains of the war artifacts. We were lucky as it stopped raining by then.

From there we drove to where it is possible to see the Heliar Holm and copinsay lighthouse. Here it was the same because of the bad weather not good to take pictures.

And then off to our b&b, there we mentioned going to the brough of Birsay lighthouse but she tod us that wasn’t going to be possible because they were working on the causeway. But we decided to go and see for ourselves. But when we arrived there we were lucky as the causeway was open en we could cross the causeway (which is only accessible at low tide). So we crossed the causeway and walked up to the lighthouse.

Day 2: Arriving Newcastle and getting to Gill’s bay

Orkney & Shetland (2014) Posted on Wed, May 21, 2014 15:10:07

This morning we arrived on shedule in Newcastle after a good night rest this time (which is a miracle for me sleeping well on the boat but anyway…) We drove off to Gill’s Bay where we were staying the night. On the way there we saw some beautiful scenery. We arrived in our b&b around 8pm.

First day: getting ready for another lighthousehunting vacation in Scotland

Orkney & Shetland (2014) Posted on Wed, May 21, 2014 15:07:04

Today we are making ourselves ready to get to Scotland again but this year we are going to the Orkney and shetland islands.

So we are leaving for IJmuiden again from where we take the ferry to Newcastle.

We arrived at 3pm in IJmuiden and after a while the check-in started. We were ready to see some lighthouses!

12th of June: getting to the Bell Rock lighthouse

Scotland trip 2013 Posted on Wed, May 21, 2014 14:35:57

Today we arranged a trip back to the Bell Rock lighthouse. I hoped to find some people who would be joining us out on this trip but unfortunately it was only the two of us. The skipper wasn’t there at the arranged time so I had to call him. I was under the impression that he rather not do the trip out there because he couldn’t make enough profit with only the two of us out on the trip. But anyway he took us out again and it was again great being out there. This time it was getting low tide so unfortunately no pictures with waves smashing against the lighthouse. But it was nice anyway!

11th of June getting to the Isle of May

Scotland trip 2013 Posted on Wed, May 21, 2014 14:30:39

Yes today was finally the day we would get to the Isle of May. As last year we didn’t manage to get there but today it looked good. When we arrived on the isle of May we first had to go passed a group of sterns. Which was an experience itself trying not to be attacked by the birds. But anyway once that was passed our trip around the Island could begin.

First we went to the new lighthouse (as you could still see the remains of the first lighthouse next to it) and then went further along to the low light.

On the way we were lucky to see some puffins to get pictures of them. I love those birds there so cute with that combination of colours. So after a few hours on the Island we headed back. But the sea was quite rougher returning then going to the Island. But once back ashore we were glad that we finally got out to the isle of May.
